Trip to Wakehurst Place - Sunday, 20th July

After weeks of continuous sunshine, the weather decided to break for our trip to Wakehurst but the rain showers certainly didn’t stop us enjoying a lovely day out. The booked tours enhanced our visit and although we couldn’t possibly see the full 500 acres we had a good taste of the gardens and wandered around the American Prairie Garden, full of eryngium yuccifolium and the beautiful walled gardens and bog garden. And of course, a visit to the Millenium Seed Bank was a must. Sir David Attenborough has called it “perhaps the most significant conservation initiative ever” and “an insurance policy for the natural world”. The Millenium Seed Bank is a global effort to collect and store seeds from wild plant species, particularly those that are threatened or endangered, as a safeguard against extinction. A big thank you to Andy for organising this trip.

Evening garden visit to Red Kites

We had a warm welcome from Mags and Les and a lovely evening wandering around their beautiful sloping gardens in Bledlow Ridge. The sun was shining and the tea and home made cakes finished off a perfect evening. All the proceeds of our evening go to the National Garden Scheme and DGS contributed £270 this time. Les and Mags have raised £30,000 over the years from opening their beautiful garden which is fantastic. They have lived at Red Kites for 40 years and have opened their gardens for the NGS for the past 16 years. Apart from having help from a hedge cutter to trim their enormous hedge border, they manage their garden by themselves…. no mean feat as it covers 1.5 acres. Thank you to all who came along.
